The Walking Dead Pre-Finale Thoughts

Tonight is the season 6 finale of The Walking Dead. I am both excited and kind of not. Let me explain, The Walking Dead was my second favorite show when it first came out. I was absolutely in love with it, but the last two seasons have been inconsistent for me. They have been keeping too many characters around, and many of them are not interesting or relevant. Another problem for me is that the show keeps using the same formula. I am not talking about the zombies because I love zombies. It is more of the “you have to open up because you are broken storyline,” for example. How many times have we seen it? Oh, Daryl, you need to open up because you cannot be a badass anymore, and you need to pour out your feelings. That is fine, but he has done that already. We know Daryl has feelings. The show tries to solve that by using that formula with the other characters like Abraham, Sasha, Rosita, etc. I don’t know, I just want to see something different.

Another thing is that the Game of Thrones element is gone. I am talking about the non-hesitation to kill off a character during the show’s earlier seasons. Now, it is like the show runners want to keep everyone around. They will find loopholes and kill off someone, but it is not anyone too major. The last major death was Noah in season 5, and even that did not really connect with me. This season has been a tease with killing people (cough, Glenn). Rick’s group has been in constant danger from Negan and his Saviors, but they always get out of impossible situations. How do you infiltrate Negan’s hideout and not even lose anyone? There should have been at least one casualty from Team Rick. Denise’s death did nothing to me because she was not developed enough, so it was missing that dramatic effect verses when we saw characters like Shane, Lori, Dale, and Hershel die. It sounds messed up, but I want characters to go, specifically major ones.

Going off of the last thing I said, someone major will die tonight, but it is expected. The problem here is that the element of surprise is gone. Negan is coming, so we know some people in Team Rick will be killed. There is no suspense for me especially since for the past week I have been hearing about Daryl being in danger of dying. It does not help that Talking Dead has Norman Reedus on tonight, and the curse of that show is that a dead cast member usually appears.

That being said, I am definitely looking forward to The Walking Dead finale. The show is still one of my favorites. I have just seen faults with it, but I know the finale will do the trick like all the previous ones had. Happy Walking Dead finale!
