So I want to talk to you all about a very exciting game that some, or many, of you have heard about. I’m writing about Pokémon Go! So first off Pokémon has been around for 20 years as some of you may know because any special events Nintendo has put on recently along with the re-release of Pokémon Blue and Red versions. I remember getting a Gameboy color and my parents buying me both versions of the game (personally I was a bigger fan of Red version). I’m sure some of you remember Missing No. and all the fun that ensued with flower-moon quantities of master balls. In September of last year Pokémon Go was announced. Since then the Pokémon Company have done very well at only teasing elements of the game here and there. Until now, Niantic which is the creator of Ingress has released 3 screenshots along with some details about how the game will play.

So for those who never played Ingress it is an augmented-reality game where you have to travel in real life to capture points. It seems Pokémon Go will play similarly. You will be able to choose from 3 factions and then have to fight the other 2 factions for control of gyms around the world. However to even have the Pokémon to battle with you have to go around and try to catch them. Apparently Pokémon will be found where they would be found in games. So you want a Magikarp? Better go to a lake. Zubat? Check out that cave where the old hermit lives in your neighborhood. Now to battle at an enemy’s gym you’re going to have to travel to the real world location that the gym is representing on Google Maps and fight it out there. There will also be Pokéstops, what I’m guessing will be the augmented reality version of a Pokémart where you might be able to purchase potions. So far there is no news on how capturing Pokémon will work so we’re going to have to be patient and wait.

I don’t know about all of you but I’m pretty excited. Not super though because there are some questions that come to mind. First if I want a Deoxys does that mean I’ll have to travel to space? Also it’s possible that in order to find some Pokémon like Sandshrew you might be traveling to the Sahara. This might get annoying because let’s say you live in an area that has no natural sights such as forest, or it only has plains for miles. What are you going to be able to catch there? Will Porygon only be available in Silicon Valley? These are important questions people! The next question is how will we obtain Pokéballs? Is it through real currency or through points/currency we earn in-game? Is it going to be a mixture like most mobile games where you can wait for 3 decades and finally get enough gems to buy something or spend the $10 to get the number of gems you need? The same question applies to potions and anything you can buy. Additionally I’m curious if there are going to be special items for your Pokémon like there are in the game and will there be special games that you can play within? Admittedly that might be a pipedream but it would be awesome to see down the line. Finally let’s say you lose a battle and have to recover. What will be the wait period? Can you drive to a Pokéstop and heal your Pokémon or pay some price to shorten the wait? Overall I’m excited but a little apprehensive how this is going to turn out. One thing I am going to say is that the Pokémon Company is doing a good job of getting old fans like me excited for the next step in our Pokémon adventures!
