Supercell and Super Money

I ran into an interesting article today over at Gamespot. According to Supercell, the producer of games such as: Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Hay Day, and Boom Beach, approximately 100,000,000 people play their games daily, which they claim is more than the amount of coffee drinkers per day in America. That’s a staggering number.

It seems that as our technology improves more and more, greater amounts of money and possible enjoyment can be found on our mobile devices. I was having a discussion with a colleage the other night on the Impact of mobile games, specifically over Konami which I had read is moving into mobile games. There is a decent amount of money to be found in mobile games, however we’ll stick with Supercell as our target. According to Tom Cheshire over at Wired, Supercell released their signature games Hay Day and Clash of Clans in the summer of that year and within 6 months of release were bringing in $1 million a day. After a few years once Softbank bought out all shares of Supercell, the mobile games producer was valued at approximately $5.5 billion, that’s insane. To put this into perspective I checked out some GDP data over at the World Bank to compare to some state economies: Supercell’s value is greater than Fiji and Liberia separately. Supercell could be its own little island nation!

It’s interesting to think about consoles seeing competition from people’s mobile devices. However this outcome isn’t a complete surprise, many people in 1st world, BLOC, and developing nations have a mobile device and these games generally are supported by most mobile devices today. Couple this availability with the appealing In-App Purchases model, it’s no surprise that these games and companies that produce them give consoles a run for their money. How do you all feel about this increase in mobile gaming? Do you play any yourselves? If you do, do you make In-App Purchases (IAP)? Any questions or topics you’d like me to explore, let me know in the comments!
